The
Parent Corporation of Pacific, Inc.
The Hines Corporation is a privately held management company
in Muskegon, Michigan, that oversees eight manufacturing facilities in the Midwest
and Texas along with a distributorship in New York. In 1999, the corporation had
combined sales of nearly $75 million and employed approximately 500 associates.
Its companies manufacture a wide range of products, from valves and springs to
gasoline dispensers and boilers. The
Early Opportunities
Larry W. Hines started the company in 1985. It was his belief
that with the support of skilled and experienced management, small, struggling
and mature businesses offer tremendous opportunities for growth and performance.
While many people consider manufacturing to be staid and unimaginative, Hines
found the operations to be dynamic, challenging and rewarding. Each offered unique
and subtle challenges that presented exciting opportunities to earn meaningful
equity and success.
As an entrepreneur, Larry's first acquisition was in 1985 when he purchased the
Pacific Floor Machine Company. It was a small manufacturer in San Francisco, California,
founded in 1946, that was later relocated to Muskegon, Michigan, and renamed Pacific
Cleaning Systems, Inc.
Shortly afterwards, Larry formed Hines Corporation, the holding company to support
the operation and to consider additional acquisitions. By following a carefully
thought-out acquisition plan, Hines continued to grow, mostly through 15 acquisitions
and two start-ups. The Corporation primarily acquired mature Midwest manufacturing
companies with net sales ranging from $5-15 million. The
Partnerships
Among them was the Johnson Boiler Company, a 134-year old
manufacturer in Ferrysburg, Michigan, in 1987, and DynaTorque, Inc. in Muskegon,
Michigan, in 1988. It also acquired Garlock Equipment Co. in Minneapolis, Minnesota,
and a Garlock distributorship in New York, Russell Dean, Inc., in 1990, now called
Garlock East Equipment Co. More recent additions include American Coil Spring
Company in Muskegon, Michigan, E&S Valve Components, Inc. in Longview, Texas,
and Bennett Pump Company in Spring Lake, Michigan.
As President of Hines Corporation, Larry focuses primarily on operational issues
and acquisition strategies. His management team includes Richard Witham, Executive
Vice President; Michele Buckley, Vice President of Human Resources; Gregory Longcore,
Chief Financial Officer; and G. Thomas Doyal, Vice President, Business Development. |
